Adventure, a love story, the battle between good and evil, and plenty of opportunities for comedy – it sounds like a plot that would appeal to a group of primary school-age boys.
And appeal it did. All these ingredients and more are elements of the play Robin Hood, staged by the Junior School earlier in the year. This contemporary play by author Tim Kelly is based on the legend of Robin of Locksley. Set in Sherwood Forest, close to Nottingham Castle, the play captures the adventurous spirit and noble pursuits of Robin Hood and his merry band of men.
The play reveals that Robin Hood (Robin of Locksley) has become an outlaw in Sherwood Forest and is leading a merry life with his followers. Anyone needing a place to live or food to eat is welcome in the greenwood. Poor peasants led by Robin are waging a battle against the evil Prince John, who has taken the place of his much-loved brother, King Richard the Lion Heart. Richard has gone on a crusade to the holy lands and may not be back for years.
The choice of Robin Hood as the Junior School production satisfied both educational and artistic goals. The script demanded discipline and risk-taking from the actors, while providing scope for fun and celebration. Part of the rehearsal process involved script-writing workshops, dance workshops, music and costume design, from which ideas emerged and were incorporated into the script. Over 120 students, staff and parents were involved in Robin Hood, of which 64 were boys on stage and nine backstage or set-building.
The enthusiasm, energy and practical help of Junior School staff, parents and students made the theatre production process a very rewarding experience.
