Fish, Quick and Rose heading home
After the outstanding success of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Scotch College Drama Department moved quickly into another full-scale senior production, Cloudstreet.
A sprawling stage adaptation of Tim Winton’s enormously successful novel, Cloudstreet involved a total of 17 senior students from Scotch and St Catherine’s School, who were given a most challenging task: to portray over 45 different characters through 102 different scenes.
They all handled this task with great aplomb, and the collaborative work of these actors, coupled with those responsible for the technical areas, enabled the production to move seamlessly through this epic tale.
Cloudstreet is a wonderful example of contemporary Australian theatre. While many of its themes are universal, its language and characters are richly Australian as well as most provocative and challenging. The actors are to be commended for the maturity they showed in their approach to the text, and the credibility they brought to each of their characters. By all accounts it was wonderfully received, and I am grateful to all those involved who made a commitment to the Cloudstreet experience.
