Shakespeare may never be the same again after an innovative performance of the Bard’s music in the Geoffrey McComas Theatre by some of Melbourne’s premier actors and musicians.
The boys and parents lucky enough to attend Songs, Sonnets and Rock ’n’ Roll experienced a unique and inspiring event, which included the poetry and language of Shakespeare’s works through contemporary and traditional music, recital, anecdote and dramatic readings.
The acclaimed actor and spookily bard-like Richard Piper enlisted the help of his ‘friends’ from the Melbourne Theatre Company (Kate Kendall, Julie Nihill, Rod Mullinar and Luciano Martucci) and some of Australia’s most acclaimed musicians (Wendy Stapleton, Paul Norton, Greg Ham and Gerry Hale), to take his audience on a journey into the beauty and fun of language and lyric.
For many the highlight was seeing some of our own Year 10 and 11 boys sharing the stage with these greats, to perform an extract from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, while some Year 12s breathed new life into their VCE English text, Hamlet.
