Two voyages to be led by an Old Scotch Boy – Captain Bill McAuley (’68) – will provide more than 100 Australian Year 11 students with an unprecedented opportunity for first-hand scientific investigation in Antarctica.
Participants in the RSV-Intrepid expeditions will be selected on merit for the two voyages. One voyage will be conducted in each of the Antarctic summers of 2006–07 and 2007–08. The Royal Society of Victoria is running the expeditions, as a project of the 2007–08 International Polar Year. (The IPY actually runs for two years, from March 2007 to March 2009.)
RSV-Intrepid will engage the young people in hands-on studies of the Antarctic ice, atmosphere, ocean and land, in shipboard and shore-based investigative and experimental projects.
Leader of the expeditions Bill McAuley is a geologist who has served as an officer both in the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Australian Engineers.
