The Scotch College Foundation has been the fortunate recipient of two very generous bequests recently. John Wall OAM (’41) left a portion of his estate amounting to almost $300,000, which will be used to establish the perpetual John Wall Bursary. This bursary will provide financial assistance at the discretion of the Principal and the School Council’s Scholarship Committee to boys at the School whose families are experiencing financial difficulties.
Lloyd Orton (’35) died in 1996, but his bequest, in excess of $700,000, came to the School in 2006 following the death of his wife of 41 years, Helene. Lloyd was the son of Albert Orton, known to thousands of Scotch boys as ‘Froggy’, who was on the staff from 1920 to 1953. A member of the 1926 School Orchestra, ‘Froggy’ trained boys’ voices for Foundation Day concerts until 1936 and conducted the concert for many years. After his retirement he looked after admissions to Scotch for several years. Lloyd had a most distinguished career as an architect, but was also notable for his community and volunteer work. He was a member of the Hawthorn City Council from 1965–74 and Mayor in 1969–70. He was also a member of the Swinburne Institute Council from 1973–1987, when he retired as President of the Council.
Lloyd Orton’s bequest will be used to set up the Orton Family Music Scholarships to commemorate his father’s contribution to Scotch, especially in the area of music. These new scholarships will help bring the most gifted musicians to Scotch College and enhance our already wonderful music program. Further details of the Scotch College Foundation bequest program, and both the Alexander Morrison Circle and Christina Morrison Circle, may be obtained from Jane Morgan, Bequest Coordinator.
