Our unhonoured war dead

My ongoing task of identifying Old Boys who served in World War II has so far found 4,200, and is up to names beginning with ‘M’.

In addition, we continue to find Old Boys who died in Word War II but are not on the Memorial Hall’s Honour Roll.

As well as the unhonoured dead named in previous Great Scots, I have found those listed below. Please contact me if you can tell me more about them.

Alan James GRIFFITHS (b. 25 March 1921 in Melbourne). A civil engineer, he enlisted in the Army in 1942 at Elwood. Lieutenant Griffiths of 48 D.C.R.E. (Works), Royal Australian Engineers, died accidentally in New Guinea on 19 June 1944, aged 22. He is buried in the Lae War Cemetery.

Maxwell Vernon LEWIS (b. 28 August 1917 in Hawthorn). Enlisted in the RAAF in 1937 at Point Cook. Squadron-Leader Lewis of 24 Squadron was shot down by the Japanese over the Timor Sea on 25 May 1942, aged 24. His body was never recovered, and his absence from our Honour Roll may reflect his family’s hope that he might yet return. He is commemorated in the Lae Memorial.

James LOVE (b. 15 March 1905 in Mareeba, North Qld). A bank officer of Neutral Bay, NSW, he enlisted in the RAAF in 1941 at Brisbane. Flying-Officer Love, serving with 27 Operational Training, RAF, died accidentally in the United Kingdom on 20 November 1942, aged 37. He is buried in Fradley Parish Churchyard, Staffordshire.

Joseph MACKAY (b. 8 August 1894 at Clunes, Glengower or Bendigo). A prefect in 1913–14. He served in World War I. Living in Elsternwick, he enlisted in the Army in 1939. Captain Mackay of 6 Australian Infantry Training Battalion died in Australia of injuries on 25 February 1942, aged 47. He is buried at the Springvale Crematorium.

John Keith MACKEY (b. 28 August 1911 in Melbourne). Living in Kirribilli, NSW, he enlisted in the Army in 1942. Warrant Officer II Mackey of the Australian Army Provost Corps died in Malaya on 28 February 1942, aged 30. Presumed dead, his body was never found. He is commemorated in the Singapore Memorial.
