The Old Scotch Bushwalking Club’s annual winery walk is always a highlight of the year’s program, and the 2007 event on Sunday 21 October was certainly no exception.
Superbly organised by Layton and Chris Moss, the club this year travelled by bus from Scotch to the Tahbilk winery at Nagambie on a rather sizzling 34 degree spring day.
The Tahbilk crew was waiting for us, with wine tastings and winery tours, including a visit to the dank, cool 19th century cellars. We enjoyed the reprieve from the heat outside.
Tahbilk is set on 1,214 hectares of rich Goulburn River flats, with an 11km frontage to the river. There are 200 hectares of vines, and the winery produces 100,000 cases of wine annually with over 20% exported.
Our bushwalk took us around the billabong and the rapidly drying wetlands, and was an excellent precursor to a fabulous lunch in the Tahbilk restaurant. Next it was down to the Goulburn River for a relaxing riverboat cruise to Mitchelton and more tastings – for those who were still willing and able.
It only remained for us to board the bus for the trip home, with our driver, Hugo, delivering us safely back to Scotch at precisely the advertised return time of 6pm. It was one of the best ever winery walks.

Scotch Old Boys continued to dominate the annual APS past students’ golf tournament, winning the George Dickenson Cup for the third successive year.
The tournament was held at Royal Melbourne Golf Club on 19 November in very hot conditions, with the thermometer nudging 38 degrees.
The best individual performance was by Leigh Dawborn, who finished +4. Leigh, currently Captain at Victoria Golf Club, also won this event last year. He played with his son, Tim.
Final scores were calculated by averaging the scores of the top 15 players:
1st Scotch College +.7
2nd Xavier College +.06
3rd Caulfield Grammar School –.4
The best six Old Scotch players were Leigh Dawborn, Tim Dawborn, Peter Johns, Robert Collie, Peter Hardy-Smith and Tony Kent. The day was also significant as it was the first time old girls as well as old boys played – four young women from Geelong Grammar competed.
Stephen Hanna (‘82), Scott Montgomery (‘85) and Dylan Mercer (‘07)
Words: MANSON RUSSEL • PRESIDENT, OLD SCOTCH BOWLS CLUB
The Old Scotch Bowls club started the 2007–08 season in style, with four resounding wins over Kew Heights/MCC Combined, Balwyn, Kew Heights and East Malvern RSL, winning by 31, 47, 35 and 28 shots respectively. These results were dampened by a loss against Old Melburnians (22 shots) and a washout against the M.C.C.
This season we have heartily welcomed two new members – Graeme Edgoose and John Manton (’46) – and we trust they will have a long and happy association with us.
All told we average about 25 players per match, and we offer an invitation to bowlers in the Scotch Family to join us in a happy social and competitive atmosphere. Please contact our secretary, Keith Weymouth on 9817 1780, or me (9809 1054) if you’d like more information.
