Year 12 Dinner Dance comes to life at Leonda.
Words: Will McMahon • Year 12
Saturday 31 March marked the beginning of a new era for the boys of Year 12. For it was on that night, after a four-year hiatus, that the Scotch College Year 12 dinner dance came to life.
To ensure every detail was attended to, the formal involved a much diligent and committed work. The Committee, headed by Mr Tim Shearer, Mr Ken Wheat and Mrs Monika Matlik, worked with students Daniel Corridon, James Bowden, Mark Rattray and was topped off with the artistic talents of Daniel Wagner and Daniel Bryant. This group worked incredibly hard to ensure the formal was a success. Special thanks need to be given to the entire committee but especially to Tim Shearer, as without his guidance the night would not have gone ahead. Their hard work was certainly worth every moment, as it was truly a brilliant night.
With a strict adherence to formal dress it was always going to be a special night, and to see the arrival of each of the boys immaculately dressed was a true spectacle. Equally, all the girls that attended rose to the occasion and each individually added a sparkle to the room that will be hard to forget.
The night itself provided a mosaic of feelings and emotions: from the sorrow that all 500 people felt as many learnt for the first time of the passing of Nathan Francis during Will Vigor’s special tribute, to the enthusiastic and jubilant dancing lead by our very own Mr Cracknell.
Leonda did a very good job. They provided delicious food and a great venue, draped in a collage of Scotch colours. Following the meals, the dance floor was opened by the School Captain, Ed Whitelaw, and with a typical show of audacious flare, he called for a unified Macarena. From here, the night went brilliantly, with people dancing or simply enjoying the company of good friends. The dancing concluded with the unveiling of our King, Daniel Parisi, and his Queen who were subjected to a well deserved moonlight dance to the accompaniment of ‘Blue Moon’. However, if you turned your eyes from the action of the dance floor and looked over to the teachers (those who weren’t already dancing), you would often see many of them just sitting back and admiring the scene in front of them as the boys whom they once knew had certainly proven themselves to be young men.
The Year 12 dinner dance was a celebration of the Class of 2007 year group and as the MC mentioned on the night, ‘Our deeds and friendships create a steadfast bond that will never be forgotten. As a year group, we are unified and will remember each other forever.’
