Studying the history of Scotch College has allowed the Year 5 boys to consolidate their understanding about the past, and to reflect on how we can contribute to the future. Dr Jim Mitchell from the School Archives visited our room and showed us an extensive range of photographs from years ago. We asked many questions about the uniforms worn in the past and about what sports and subjects were taught in the early years of the College. The boys also completed some research related to the names of our current Houses and some famous Old Collegians. The boys have reflected on this unit, and the following are some of their thoughts on ‘why it is important to learn the history of Scotch’.

‘We should know which year our School started, where in Melbourne and who was the first Principal.’
‘It is good to learn about the old traditions because we will now know why we use them.’
‘It is important to know the history so that in the future if our children ask hard questions we will know the answers.’
‘It is important to know about the many students who went to fight in all the wars, and how we remember them with plaques in the Memorial Hall.’
‘It has been good to learn about the School crest, motto and shield. We looked in detail at all the parts of the shield and what they signify.’
‘When we look back through our past history we can see all the changes that have happened with the site at Hawthorn. We saw many changes to the buildings and how the trees have grown.’
‘I have learned a lot about the Houses that we have in the Junior School, and also the ones in the Senior School. It is interesting to know who they have been named after and what part they played in Scotch’s history.’
‘It has been good to learn about the history, as my father and grandfather both went to Scotch and they have told many stories.’
The boys are now more aware of the history of their learning environment, and how the people who have been involved in the School before them have created the School that we know today. Each day they are encouraged to ask questions, to develop generalisations, to reflect on their learning, and to monitor their own progress towards the consolidation of literacy and numeracy skills and the application of these skills to a range of topics.
