Scotch College

Grade 6

Year 6 is considered a memorable year in the lives of Scotch students. As the leaders of the Junior School, they need to manage a variety of situations by demonstrating cooperation and understanding of others, and by maintaining a responsible and positive attitude to life.

Organisational skills are an extremely important element in preparation for Senior School, and the boys face the challenge of being excellent role models for the entire Junior School. Throughout the year the boys are given many opportunities to further develop their leadership skills, and to communicate School values to different audiences, while encouraging a feeling of pride within our community.

‘We strive to improve ourselves by showing initiative and trying hard to achieve the goals we have set in mathematics, English and all other subjects.’

‘We make sure we do everything that is asked of us, to try to be the best we can in our future life. We all have potential in different areas, and it’s great we are given the chance to explore a variety of learning techniques. We are working on an exciting project at the moment that is called ‘Our Life in a Box’. It’s our autobiography, presented in a highly creative way using a shoe-box as a starting point.’

‘We show initiative by welcoming visitors and volunteering to help. If we see younger students doing the wrong thing, we encourage them to change their behaviour.’

‘We complete tasks quickly and efficiently and enjoy sharing our ideas with our peers. Class discussions can go for ages, and it’s good to hear people’s opinions.’

‘We help to maintain a clean environment and open doors for teacher and guests. We support and show an interest in the younger students in the School through our Cross-Age Program. Acting as a role model to the other students in the School is one of our greatest responsibilities. Our Cross-Age buddies think we are special and we think they are too. Hopefully we will see them in Senior School.’

‘We organise ourselves by writing in our record book, and take on the responsibility to check it each night and coordinate with our timetable to make sure we have the correct gear. There is nothing worse than not having your runners when you have sport on that day.’

‘We write a lot of reminders in our record book so we know exactly what we have on each day. Our lives can become very busy so it’s essential to keep on top of everything. The Junior School offers many different activities for boys to become involved in, and juggling it all to make the most of life is an art form.’

‘Contributing to the School community is important to us, and we do this by raising issues in the SRC and helping the environment by picking up rubbish around the schoolyard. A safe and clean Australia is a good place to be.’

‘We also help others to do well through our Peer Support Program. Through the program we have learned a great deal about leadership.’

It is encouraging to see the comments made by our Year 6 students. The academic, social and emotional skills they develop in the Junior School will stand them in good stead to move forward as fine young men into the Senior School and beyond.
