A modern fairytale to delight Scotch audiences.
Words: Catherine Garrett • Dept of Drama and Communication
Rehearsals are in full swing for the Senior School musical, Pippin, which tells the imaginary story of Pippin, the son of Charlemagne, a king of Europe in the Middle Ages.
The Tony Award–winning musical, which was originally partially financed by Motown Records, is a modern fairy tale which has been performed by schools, community theatres and professional companies all around the world for more than 30 years.
A cast of over 40 students from Scotch and PLC are well underway rehearsing Pippin, working with Mr Rickard on music and Miss Garrett on movement, with Mr Ritchie’s over-arching concept, design and direction moving the cast and crew towards performance.
Pippin begins with the Leading Player, Nathan Su, inviting the audience to join the characters in a story about a boy prince searching for fulfilment. Pippin (Tudor Thomas) is a prince, looking for something to do with his life, yearning to discover the secret of true happiness.
Featuring a strong ensemble cast of students from Years 10, 11 and 12 who sing and dance their way through this funky story with a meaning, Pippin is not to be missed. Performances are on Thursday 2, Friday 3 and Saturday 4 August in the James Forbes Academy’s Geoffrey McComas Theatre at 8 pm.
