Inset: Mrs Maureen Crawford christens the boat
On a balmy February morning, the entire Senior School gathered in the quadrangle to witness Mrs Maureen Crawford christen the David Crawford – the new 1st VIII boat that was used most successfully in the Head of the River.
The David Crawford now joins the fleet alongside the Michael Robinson, the James Balderstone and the Bruce Lithgow, all named after Chairmen of Scotch College Council.
David Crawford spoke to the School about how to compete in all sports with a desire to win, but with graciousness in defeat and humility in victory.
The boat was the first of its kind in the world, built to a new design by former Australian oarsman Matt Dingle. It attracted a lot of interest, with a much shorter and completely different bow section, as well as having a deeper hull than most other designs. The boat was built by Sykes Racing in Geelong, and the design is now being trialled at the Australian Institute of Sport.
At the conclusion of the service, a piper led the 1st Crew with the boat to the OSCA Square for photographs of the Crawfords and the crew.
