WORDS: CHRIS WOOD • CRICKET CLUB PRESIDENT
The Old Scotch Cricket Club has been transformed, with a playing captain-coach, a new committee and a new playing group.
At the club’s annual general meeting in July, a new committee was elected – Chris Wood (’04) President, Nick Spargo (’04) Vice-President, Rick Western (’80) Secretary, Tim Shearer (’85) Treasurer, Tim Hosking (’99) Peter Ashton (’67), Pat Butler and Rob Ashton (’97).
Rob Ashton has been appointed captain-coach of the club, and comes to us from the Melbourne Cricket Club where he played 180 games (60 in the firsts) over nine years, the highlight being his maiden 1st XI century against St Kilda in 2001–02.
Rob is keen to instil a new playing culture at the club. ‘You are only strong on the field if you are strong off it,’ he says. ‘We need to define our playing parameters with the playing group early, and consistently encourage them as the season progresses. This season will be very much about the development of a new playing group and culture.’
The club will field two teams in the Melbourne Cricket Club XI competition. All matches are one-day games, and anyone interested in playing should contact Rob Ashton on 0403 866 753. GS
