Old Scotch walkers pause during the Saturday walk at Beechworth.
Twenty-three Old Scotch Bushwalking Club members arrived in Beechworth just after the heaviest rainfall the district had experienced for many a long day, prompting club members to take credit for breaking the drought. However, there were no heavy falls during the club’s weekend of walks.
We settled into very comfortable accommodation, either at a local motel, or (for most of us) in Matilda’s Cottages – self-contained limestone cottages with air conditioning and Coonara heaters, and plenty of atmosphere.
A fun night followed at the busy Commercial Hotel in downtown Beechworth. Then it was back to our lodgings for a port or hot toddy, before nestling into our cosy beds.
Conditions were ideal for our 12km walk on Saturday, and we travelled serenely through Beechworth and surrounds. That evening we headed to the restaurant at LaTrobe University, where we tucked into salmon or – appropriately – Scotch fillet.
Sunday’s walk – in cool, misty and sometimes drizzly conditions – undulated through the countryside, bringing to an end a thoroughly enjoyable weekend, well organised by Peter Williams and Sue and Graham Stanley.
