Soccer club eyes promotion after successful season

WORDS: Mr TIM WARD

After a long and eventful season, the Old Scotch Soccer Club finished off with a bang with the annual presentation and awards night held in the Boykett Room at the Cardinal Pavilion on Saturday 4 October.

Senior goalkeeper Daniel Giesen-White was sensational as our MC, keeping the crowd entertained with his sharp witty words throughout the evening. Best and fairest awards were handed out for teams from the seniors down to the fourths, with Chris Jewitt, Alex Petrakos, Will Benson and Bruce Reid picking up the honours for their respective squads.

Presentation night for the Old Scotch Soccer Club was the chance to reflect on an eventful season.

Golden boot (top goal-scorers) awards went to Nick Jewitt, Alex Petrakos, Allan Clarke and Peter Roylance. Mike Oldroyd and Rowland Melville picked up the clubman awards for their outstanding efforts off the field with the club, and former president Lambros Sioros was inducted as an honorary lifetime member for his long service to the club. The Doug Hurrell Award went to outgoing president Richard O’Nians for a mishap with an innocent shopping trolley one fateful night down at H A Smith Reserve.

On the field the boys did themselves proud, with some very respectable final positions. For season 2009 the seniors (fifth-place finish – now officially the highest ranked old boys’ club in Victoria) will be ambitiously eyeing promotion to State League division three, after some very promising results against highly fancied (as well as highly paid) sides in 2008. The reserves should have finished third, but managed a mid-table sixth spot, and will be more than capable of a top two spot in 2009. The thirds finished fifth, and will also be looking to challenge for honours with an experienced squad, as will the fourths who will look to pick up more than the one win they had in 2008.

With barely enough time to blink, it is time to turn our attention to the end of season trip for the players before a Christmas break and an early return to pre-season training in mid-January.
