Good cricketing times recalled from ’57 and ’58

Members of the 1957 and 1958 1st XIs mark their 50-year reunion.

Members of the 1957 and 1958 1st XIs met on 3 April in the President’s Room at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club for a 50-year reunion dinner. There was a good cross-section from both years, with some members accompanied by their partners.

Both teams were successful, with the ’58 XI winning the premiership and the ’57 XI runners-up. Ex-Test player Bob Cowper (’58), who captained both teams, was present with his wife Dale, all the way from Monaco. John Miles, who coached both X1s, was delighted to catch up with the players and hear all their news. Colin Youren (’57 vice-captain) was the master of ceremonies, and the highlight of the night was each team member reminiscing about his time in the X1.

Apologies came from several past players who were unable to attend, and four members who have died were fondly remembered. Everyone had a wonderful evening, and it was suggested that rather than waiting another 10 years, the X1s would get together again in five years’ time. GS
