Long-serving and dedicated Old Scotch Tennis Club luminary Colin Simpson deservedly earned life membership at the club’s annual general meeting late last year.
Colin had served 14 years as club president, and actively participated in social and competition tennis and liaison with the School. Colin became the eighth life member among current club members, and is a very worthy recipient.
The club resolved to change its name from Old Scotch Collegians’ Tennis Club to Old Scotch Tennis Club, to better reflect the wider current membership base. The club’s rules will also be updated, and a statement of the protocols for admission of new members, and the conduct expected of all club members, was discussed and agreed.
As the future of the club depends on younger people becoming involved, a concerted effort is being made to encourage young Old Scotch boys to join. Tim Shearer has been most helpful here.
Warwick Barry has been the club’s Scotch College contact and liaison for the past 17 years, and his service was acknowledged at the AGM. We welcomed Barrie Burton as our new contact.
The club provides trophies to recognise excellence in Scotch tennis, and during term four the club presented a sportsmanship award to each of the 34 tennis teams playing at Scotch College. At school assembly, the club president also presented the trophies to the winners of the Junior and Senior School doubles championships.
The club again sponsored the entry of a Scotch College students’ team in the Victorian Pennant 2008 tennis competition. GS
