Scotch College

Michael Robinson becomes Foundation President

Words: ASTRIDA COOPER • ACTING DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Michael Robinson

In the early 1970s it was identified that independent schools, including Scotch College, could only develop by embracing, without reservation, the loyal school family.

With this in mind, the newly appointed Chairman of the Building Appeal and School Council member, Sir Laurence Muir (’42), worked together with the National Fund Raising Council of Australia to create the concept of a Scotch College Foundation. The School Council agreed with the original proposal and this was submitted to the Tax Commissioner in Canberra. The trust deed and all related documents were eventually approved, and in 1973 Sir Laurence encouraged Scotch families to join him and the newly appointed Board of Trustees, in the journey to build the corpus of the Scotch College Foundation.

Sir Laurence Muir

At 31 December 2007, the Foundation Corpus, together with named scholarships and other endowments received by the Foundation totalled in excess of $35,000,000.

The Foundation has been ably led by nine chairmen during its time, and as we celebrate its 35th anniversary this year, our former Council Chairman, OSCA and Foundation President Mr Michael Robinson AO, resumes the mantle of Foundation President as the school moves into an exciting era with the arrival of the new Principal, Mr Tom Batty.

Together with the current and past parent body and friends, many Old Scotch Collegians have financially supported the school through donations, bequests, and gifts in kind. Listed below are Old Boys by year group, prior to 1950 that have been and are Foundation members. The next edition of Great Scot will list all Old Boy Alexander Morrison Circle members by year group, prior to 1950.
