As the older boys competed in a house football competition, the boys of Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 eagerly awaited Friday 6 June for their opportunity to walk on the hallowed turf of Scotch’s Main Oval, something many of their older siblings had only ever dreamt about. Not only were the boys walking where many have feared to tread, they were training with the 1st XVIII football team.
The boys arrived in their favourite team’s jumper, faces adorned with their team’s colours. Mr Sampson took them for a warm-up session before they were organised into their training groups. Each group comprised boys from each Junior Primary class. Once in their groups, the Year 11 and 12 boys took them through their paces, developing a range of kicking, dodging, handballing and marking skills. But most importantly this session helped to develop their interest in Australian Rules football while they had great fun!
It was wonderful to see the older students’ encouragement, patience and flexibility while working with our younger boys. The senior boys made this a day to remember, and we are very grateful that they gave up their own time to make this a memorable occasion for our future footy champions. GS
