Scotch wins ninth APS hockey premiership
Words: SAM BLACK • TEACHER-IN-CHARGE, HOCKEY
The Scotch 1st XI hockey team carried all before it to win the APS hockey premiership for 2008, emerging as the only Scotch premiership-winning winter sports team.
Superbly led by Captain of Hockey Tom Davies, supported by Vice Captain Luke Dawson, the team played a fine series of matches and was undefeated. It was Scotch’s ninth APS hockey premiership in the 17 years the hockey trophy has been contested.
Captain Tom Davies was selected in the Victorian under 18 hockey team, and was named captain of the APS representative side.
The boys began pre-season training back in late February, and played a series of warm-up matches against Trinity, Carey, MGS and Hale School from Perth.
The season began with a very strong 4-1 win over 2007 premiers Xavier, in which Tom Sinclair scored all our goals. Stuart Sim and Bradley Mason debuted for the team and made a great contribution against Geelong College and St Kevin’s respectively.

The senior team members have shown great leadership skills in welcoming and encouraging younger and less able boys who train with but don’t yet play with the team. This leadership was exemplified by team member Jim Unkles, who received the Tulloch Family award for his leadership in umpiring and inspirational defence, which showed the true Scotch spirit of giving oneself for others. Jim is a nationally accredited umpire who has umpired at national junior titles this year. GS
