Queen’s Birthday Honours 2008

The Scotch Family congratulates Old Scotch Collegians and members of the Scotch Family who received Queen’s Birthday honours in 2008.

Words: David Ashton

Martyn Myer, AO (’74)

Queen’s Birthday awards are made to people who have served their profession, their community or their country with distinction – and without the thought that one day they might receive this kind of recognition for their efforts. From the list above of worthy award recipients, we have selected three examples of exemplary service.

Martyn received his award for service to business and to the community, particularly through contributions to medical research and the establishment of the Florey Neurosciences Institute, and through executive and philanthropic roles with a range of organisations.

Prof Ian Sloan, AO (’45)

Ian received his award for service to education through the study of mathematics, particularly in the field of computational mathematics, as an academic, researcher and mentor, and to a range of national and international professional associations.

Prof Charles Birch, AM (’35)

For service to science, particularly in the field of biology as an academic and researcher, and through contributions to the understanding of the relationship of science to religion.

Peter Griffin, AM (past parent)

Peter received his award for service to the community through support for health, medical research, arts and charitable organisations, and to business, particularly in the investment and banking sectors.

Ian McClelland, OAM (’66)

Ian received his award for service to agriculture, particularly through the development of sustainable crop production systems, and innovative farming and land management practices.

Colonel Kenneth McKenzie, DSM, OAM (’42)

Kenneth received his award for service to the welfare of ex-service personnel and their families, through roles with the Returned Services League of Australia.

Prof Rob Thomas, OAM (past parent)

Rob received his award for service to medicine through surgical oncology and cancer services in Victoria.
