Words: Ms Astrida Cooper – Acting Director of Development
More than 300 grandparents and special visitors joined the Year 7 students in the annual Year 7 grandparent mornings, hosted by the Scotch College Foundation during Term 1. For many grandparents this visit to Scotch is their first encounter with the school, and they depart knowing that their grandsons will make the most of the academic and co-curricular opportunities offered.
The boys rushed from their morning classes to meet their guests in OSCA Square, accompanying them to the Ian Roach Hall, where they were welcomed by the acting director of development and the Principal. The guests enjoyed strong musical performances by the Ted Joyner Band and the Henri Touzeau Strings, and they were suitably impressed by the standard of music achieved. It was most impressive to see more than 80 students participating in the two musical groups.
Head of Year 7 Mr Stephen Pallot encouraged the boys to show the visitors the various areas of the Senior School where they spend time – the Memorial Hall, the computer and language centres, the library and the archives. The boys are always amazed at how much time the grandparents like to spend in the archives museum!
Lunch in the Cardinal Pavilion overlooking the Yarra was a fitting and welcome way to end the day for the visitors, some of whom had travelled from interstate and country Victoria to attend.
The grandparents and other guests always depart Scotch knowing that they will be welcomed back to the school on many more occasions, to watch their boys participate and excel in a myriad of activities.
