WORDS: MS SUE FAULKHEAD
Though Gerald Abbott Maling (1915) died more than 50 years ago, his legacy lives strongly on through a wonderful bequest which continues to support boarding scholarships at Scotch. The school is most grateful to the Maling family for this generous and continuing gift and the support it goes on giving to our boarders, in particular country boys.
Gerald Maling attended Scotch College from 1909 to 1915 along with his brother Henry (1919). At the age of 18 he enlisted in the 1st Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and embarked for overseas duties in February 1916. Wounded in 1917 and transferred back to Australia, Gerald was discharged in March 1918. He graduated with a Law degree in 1923 and later became a senior legal officer in the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s department. He died on 14 July 1959.
Our current School Captain, Jack Fowles is a great grandson of Gerald’s brother, Henry, continuing the family’s long and proud association with Scotch.
