Scotch’s new concert grand piano takes its rightful place in the world-class Ian Roach Hall.
MR JOHN FERGUSON – DIRECTOR OF MUSIC
The quality of piano performance at Scotch has been of the highest order, and the music has brought real joy in recent years.
The Ian Roach Hall is genuinely world class – quite probably the best hall of its size in the country, and loved by all who perform in it. This has meant that our musicians are able – and indeed inspired – to strive for the highest levels of artistic integrity and subtlety. The hall has also attracted exceptional artists from Australia and overseas, and events like the biennial Piano Festival and the ScotchArts visiting performers’ series are testaments to the artistic environment we now enjoy.
The decision to purchase – for the first time in Scotch’s history – a new concert grand piano was made in light of having a hall in which to hear it, and especially students and visiting artists worthy of such a fine instrument. Ms Teresa Lavers, our Head of Keyboard Studies, carefully selected a Steinway ‘D’ at the Steinway factory in Hamburg. We have all been delighted with her selection.
We are inviting the Scotch community to do two things. The first is to come to concerts and enjoy the music, the ambience, the triumphs achieved by our young artists and their masterly mentors. Take out a subscription to ScotchArts and also come to the piano festival.
The second is to please support the Music Auxiliary in purchasing the Steinway by buying a key. There are 88 to choose from, and you can personally contribute to the musical environment of which we are so proud. The auxiliary has already raised most of the money through a piano fund started several years ago, but we do need that final ‘push’. Details are available on the school website. Celebrate the music!
