Towards the end of last year, the Principal announced that the School Captain for 1999 would be Timothy Downing.
Tim has the special distinction of also being Captain of the Scotch College Junior School (1992). In his Year 12 in 1998 he was a school prefect, captain of Lawson house, captain of cricket and deputy vice captain of football.
Tim has had an outstanding sporting career at Scotch. He has represented the 1st XI and the 1st XVIII since Year 10. Tim was the winner of the H.I. Cohen trophy for cricket in 1997 and 1998, and was judged best and fairest in last year's 1st XVIII.
After an excellent VCE in 1998, Tim has deferred entry into Melbourne University where he will undertake a combined Commerce/Arts degree.
In the first week of the school year, Tim addressed the Year 7 boys on their orientation day, and spoke at the school assembly when the school prefects were installed. He has already shown himself to be an first class leader with a friendly and caring manner.
At the first assembly for the year, Dr Donaldson announced the appointment of Tom Cade as the school's Vice Captain for 1999. Tom came to Scotch in 1992 via grade 5 in the Junior School. In his years in the Senior School, Tom has accumulated many distinctions: academically he has been dux of Year 10 and last year was placed second in Year 11; he achieved his A.Mus.A in 1996 and played a solo with the symphonic wind at last year's Foundation Day Concert. He is the Pipe Sergeant of the Pipes and Drums in 1999.
Tom is an outstanding athlete and currently holds four Scotch athletic records, and ten records competing for Old Scotch. He has competed successfully at both State and National athletics meetings.
The school looks forward with confidence to the leadership to be provided by Tim Downing and Tom Cade in 1999. These two young men are outstanding role models for all Scotch students, and as well as being popular with their peers, they are widely respected and admired by both students and staff.
