The 1998 VCE results provide confirmation that the pursuit of academic excellence remains one of the school's strongest features.
On the basis of the new Equivalent National Entrance Rank (ENTER), 25 members of the Class of 1998 (over 10%) attained scores of 99 or above. Two students, Ross Geddes and Hiroshi Miyazaki scored 99.95, the highest scores possible, placing them among the top 0.05% of Year 12 students in Australia. Ross and Hiroshi have been named joint Dux of the school.
Several other Year 12s also produced excellent ENTER scores. Tim Quach (99.90), Leon Sher (99.85), Jonathon Evans, Shaun Gertsman and Jason Wong (99.80), Estyn Chung (99.75), Maun Suang Boey and Richard Turner (99.70), Tom Lin (99.65), Nicholas Kotros as well as Paul Greening, Kevin So and Jason Ventura (99.55).
Among those who studied Specialist Mathematics over 40% achieved raw scores of 40 or above, placing them in the top 10% in the subject statewide. Other subjects with significant enrolments with 25% or more scoring 40 or better were: Physical Education, Legal Studies, Mathematical Methods, Chemistry, Geography and Accounting.
Eighteen students studied university enhancement subjects at the University of Melbourne or Monash University. Five of them were awarded first class honours or high distinctions and nine others achieved credits or better.
There were 10 perfect study scores of 50. Maun Suang Boey (Chemistry), Toby Mullen (Economics), Jonathon Evans, Ross Geddes, Tom Lin and Leon Sher (English), Tim Wilson-Humphries (Further Mathematics) as well as Hiroshi Miyazaki and Tim Quach (Specialist Mathematics).
On the basis of their fine achievements, Jonathon Evans, Ross Geddes, Hiroshi Miyazaki and Toby Mullen have attained a 1998 Premier's VCE Award.
In recent years the University of Melbourne and Monash University have introduced scholarships designed to attract the best students to their courses. Five such scholarships have been offered to students from the Class of 1998. Ross Geddes (Arts/Law) and Hiroshi Miyazaki (Eng/Sci) both received a Melbourne National Scholarship as a consequence of their "perfect scores". Tim Quach (Com/Law) accepted a full fees scholarship to the University of Melbourne. Shaun Gerstman (Com/Eng Monash) accepted a $6000 per year Commerce Faculty Scholarship. Estyn Chung (Com/Law Melbourne) was offered a scholarship identical to Shaun's.
First round offers from the University of Melbourne accounted for one third of Scotch 1998 Year 12 VCE students, and over 25% received an offer from Monash University. RMIT offered 11% of Scotch students first round places, while six per cent of the Class of 1998 were offered places at Deakin University and Latrobe University respectively. Science/Computing/Engineering represented 42% of all offers, while Commerce/ Business tallied 24%. Arts/ Humanities accounted for 15%, Law eight per cent and Medicine three per cent.
We wish the Class of 1998 the very best in the future no matter what they pursue. They were a group of enthusiastic scholars who brought honour to themselves, their families and their school. Well done!
Mr Ken Wheat, Head of Year 12, 1998
1998 proved to be a highly successful year for VCE Chinese at Scotch. Led by the outstanding tuition of Mr Dan Zhang, the L2 Chinese students achieved the top scores in the state.
Out of eleven students, four produced raw scores of over 40: Estyn Chung (45), Sam Chen (44), Jason Wong (43) and Hiroshi Miyazaki (41); 3 produced scores of well above state average: Chris Ch'ng (39), Blair Johnston (38) and Kevin So (360).
These exceptional results were achieved through constant hard work and dedication by every student in the class. Much thanks must be given to Mr Zhang whose visionary direction and guidance helped every single student realise their potential in this demanding subject.
Sam Chen, Blair Johnston,
Seuing Hoon Bach.
