During February this year the Prep boys began experiencing their first taste of the German language.
Both classes began with some greetings and a little singing and were then involved in our annual 'Schultuete' presentations.
As many of you already know German schoolchildren take one of these cones to school on their first day as a special treat. Parents make or buy one for their child and fill it with lollies, things to use at school, fruit etc.
The first day in Germany just involves meeting the teachers and having a look around the school and maybe watching a presentation by some of the older children.
At Scotch, we adopted the idea a few years ago and adapted it to make it special to our school and its programme.
This year boys from 5G and 5W spent their first few lessons creating their own 'Schultuete' for their Prep partner, before presenting it to him in the Prep area.
This is a delightful way for the young Scotch boys to begin their second language experience, and is an activity which also helps bond the special relationship that these cross age activities create.
I'd like to congratulate the 5W and 5G for their excellent work during this activity and wish the Preps a great first year of experiencing German.

The Junior School Parents' Association held its first ever Fathers' Day Breakfast on Thursday 3 September 1998 in the Boykett Room of the Cardinal Pavilion. Due to an overwhelming response, a second breakfast was held on Friday. Over one half of the boys in the Junior School attended along with fathers, grandfathers, and special visitors.
At 7 am, the doors were opened. Men and boys headed to breakfast. They were treated to a delicious breakfast of cheese and bacon muffins, mini croissants, mini Danish pastries, raisin toast and fresh sliced fruit. These delicacies were accompanied by orange juice, tea, coffee and milo. Portraits of fathers, produced in art class by the boys, decorated the room.
Astrida Cooper, President of the Junior School Parents' Association, welcomed the Headmaster of the Junior School, Guy Mason to the Thursday breakfast and the Deputy Headmaster Rodney Carson to the Friday breakfast.
The Thursday highlight was the lone piper, Andrew Silver, playing on the balcony of the Cardinal Pavilion. School cadets escorted the boys back to Junior School.
The Junior School Suzuki Music Group performed on Friday. They played their musical instruments pied piper style - no easy task with the large attendance.
Fathers enjoyed the opportunity to meet other dads and to talk with old friends. The breakfasts were a great start to Fathers' Day. There can be little doubt that Fathers' Day breakfasts will become a permanent feature of the Junior School calendar.
