1858 Club boosts football

The 1858 Club, a Scotch College football support group formed last year, is a mix of current parents and staff, with well known football identity Malcolm Brown as its President. The group is now a member of the Scotch Family Association.

From its successful fund raising last year, the group has provided funding to support football at the school. Some of its initiatives have been: the provision of portable shelters for interchange players and coaches; dressing gowns provided for all teams for interchange players; and funding the cost of pre-season assistant coaches for early morning training squads.

The group has also supported the U16 Northern Territory/Tiwi Islands tour by providing special tour jumpers and by assisting in the organisation of the Sportsman's Night held in March, which contributed funding to this tour. Funding is also committed for trophy presentations for all levels and also for the hosting of two Northern Territory footballers who will be coming to Scotch for two weeks in July.

Jumper Presentation

The 1858 Club again hosted and financed the 1998 1st XVIII jumper presentation. Hawthorn coach Ken Judge addressed the team and presented the jumpers in an impressive ceremony attended by parents and relatives, staff, Old Scotch Football Club representatives and members of the 1858 Club.

The group is again asking for sponsorship of this year's 1st XVIII jumpers. Parents and relatives of the team, along with supporters of Scotch football, are invited to donate $50 to sponsor a jumper or a favourite jumper number. For further information please contact Sophie Ross phone 9836 9882.

Successful Breakfast

A first for the group this year was the staging of the highly successful 1858 Club Breakfast. It was held at the Hotel Sofitel on June 18 in the week of the Cordner Eggleston Cup. The breakfast was well attended, and was addressed by football historian Dr Margaret Lyndley and featured interviews with AFL Tribunal Chairman Brian Collis, Doug Hawkins and Tony Liberatore.

Dinner Dance Coming Up

This year marks the 140th year of Scotch football and to celebrate this anniversary the 1858 Club dinner dance will be held at Leonda on Saturday 1 August. The theme of the night is 'Magic Moments', and it promises to be a fun night with a football flavour and will feature a memorabilia display, which was so popular last year. All members of the Scotch College football community are welcome and tickets at $70 each may be booked with Ann Walkom.
