Why You Should Give ...

Time is a canny conductor and a sage old stage manager. The past, though cherished, inevitably recedes. The future, though challenging, invitingly beckons.

Shakespeare wrote, 'All the world's a stage ...' Four centuries later, and on the brink of a new millennium, it is also true to say that the world is going through a stage - one in which the technology revolution, while promising to bring people closer together in some ways, threatens to separate and alienate them in other ways.

One of the key aims of The James Forbes Academy is to preserve and enhance the educative personal experience of live performance and interaction - the shared joy of learning, playing, listening, watching and being involved. There has never been a more important time to bring head and heart into balance.

Scotch has achieved so much in music and drama, it is tempting to ignore the fact that facilities for these activities have been either outdated or non-existent.

The Master Plan for the next ten years is full of innovation and promise. The Academy is its centrepiece.

May we all be inspired by the words of former Vice Principal (and now Headmaster of Camberwell Grammar School) Colin Black, addressing the Scotch College Foundation President's Dinner in 1997:

'As patrons of the arts, members of the Scotch Family become the Medicis of their time, encouraging a most worthwhile feature of school life which could otherwise be so easily overlooked. ... Refined self-awareness, sensitivity to the presence of others, a heightened capacity for teamwork - these are just a few of the valuable attributes which are nurtured on the orchestra platform, in the studio and on the stage. ... Anyone who understands the difference between a cacophony and a symphony has begun to understand the meaning of civilisation.'
