Scotch College

School Captain

Once again Scotch College has commenced the year on a very encouraging and positive note.

All year levels seem to be settling in extremely well, especially Year 7 as they are enjoying themselves at the Scotch-at-Cowes camps. Year 9 have had their first taste of services at Scotch, ranging from Cadets, St. Johns Ambulance and Scouts. The Year 10 boys are now into the senior and more responsible end of the school, undertaking new activities such as Sea Scouts, the Adventure program and Social Service.

Years 11 and 12 are now undertaking the VCE and the workload is increasing. Last year, the Class of '97 had five boys who achieved a perfect score, it is now up to the Class of '98 to try and match this fine achievement. With hard work and extra-curricular involvement each boy at the school can achieve to his fullest.

There has already been a great deal of success on the sporting field. The 1st VIII, led by Cameron McKenzie-McHarg, came second in the Head of the Yarra, and blitzed the field in the Victorian Schoolboys Championship by winning the gold medal.

The 1st XI cricket is on top of the APS ladder with outstanding performances by Ben Milliken taking six and five wickets in two consecutive games, and Ricky Maplestone scoring one hundred runs off just sixty-eight balls. The team is ably led by Tim Downing.

Tony White is leading the 1st Tennis team to an unbeaten run at this stage. The Swim team, led by Simon Tanner, is looking to win their ninth APS premiership in a row. It looks as though Scotch is again dominating the sporting scene.

The school is once again very lucky to have a very able group of leaders in the Prefects and School Officers. They provide an example to the younger members of the school which sets the standard expected of a Scotch Collegian.

I urge all boys to continue their involvement throughout the year in as many activities as possible. This is your school and therefore your responsibility. Make the most of it while you can!
