Scotch travelled to Sydney this year to compete for the annual trophy between the two schools. This annual encounter has now been contested continuously for 77 years.
Scotch lost the toss and Scots elected to bat on a beautiful batting wicket at the picturesque North Sydney Oval. An exciting opening spell by Milliken and McCann reduced Scots to 4/8. Partly due to a fine partnership from the Scots batsmen, Scots recovered to be 4/114 before Scotch regrouped and dismissed them for 128. McCann finished with the impressive figures of 5/19. At the close of play on the first day Scotch was 3/120, needing a further 8 to secure a first innings win. A fine innings of 58 by James Lie was instrumental in securing this sound position. After an initial hiccup when Scotch lost two early wickets, Chris Williams made a solid 48 to enable Scotch to finish its first innings at 230.
The victory means that Scotch have retained the trophy for the third consecutive year.
The tour was highly successful both on and off the field, the outstanding hospitality of the members of the Scots community being responsible for the high levels of enjoyment experienced by all the touring party. Many Scotch families were able to make the trip north.
It was most fitting that Mr Ben Hosking ('56), a former member of the Scotch XI was able to present the trophy to Tim Downing the Captain of the Scotch XI.
