A challenge for 1998

In launching the 1998 Annual Fund, Don Werner, the Old Boy Chairman, asked all Year Group Leaders to challenge class members to 'go for broke'. With a 1997 result of just over $141,000 from gifts ranging from $5 to $5,000 (yes, one very generous Old Boy is giving $5,000 per year until he dies), Don is convinced that the magic $150,000 barrier can be broken.

There are a number of building projects that Old Boys can support, including the proposed 'School of Music and Drama', development of a Design and Technology Centre, and upgrading of the boarding facilities.

Endowment possibilities

If building projects do not appeal (and they must go ahead if Scotch is to retain its position as one of Australia's foremost schools), then endowment should be the focus - for student financial aid, for the enhancement of staff salaries and for more general, but necessary aspects of a Scotch education funded by philanthropy.

'We all have our philanthropic priorities', say Don, 'and to support the education of Australian youth is of immense importance'. Although there were some outstanding class efforts in 1997, Paul Weston's Class of '61 must be particularly commended. Ken Bethell's '37ers really pulled out the stops in their reunion year, as did the '47ers led by David Thomas. Rob Olney ('79) proved that philanthropy is well and truly alive amongst the younger Old Boys.

1998 Fund

The 1998 Fund welcomes a number of new Year Group Leaders and the OSCA Council and the Scotch Foundation hope that members of their classes will support their efforts.
