Cordner/Eggleston Breakfast

It's not often that the Scotch community gets to sing the school song at 7.00 am over breakfast.

But that's what happened this year at the 1858 Club's annual Cordner Eggleston Cup Breakfast. As more than four hundred and eighty guests sipped their orange juice, to clear their voices well known football minstrel Mike Brady presented his spirited and updated versions of both the Scotch and Melbourne Grammar. school songs.

Hosking, Brown, Walkom and Brown

In only its third year, the breakfast has become a very popular event and blends football culture with the enduring resonance between the two schools.

This year's other special guest, Western Bulldogs coach Terry Wallace, shared some interesting insights into the way young players can build a career path through their involvement in the AFL.

At a time when most recruiting is focused on the VSFL Under 18 competition, Terry argued that sensible clubs always had an eye on the APS competition.

Popular television presenter, Jim Wilson, kept the function moving with contributions from Mal Brown, David Dick and Andrew Thompson. Bruce Brown drew the function to a close with some reflections on the great tradition of the Scotch-Grammar fixture and the significance of the trophy.

Energetic organiser Bruce Armstrong was delighted with the success of the function. 'We can use the proceeds to support Scotch football in various ways as well as contribute to the proposed commemorative football sculpture in Yarra Park', he commented.

And the 1858 Club caters for its evening supporters as well. This year's End of Season function at Leonda by the Yarra which featured Frank Holden and his band was another great success.
