Winter Cross Country

The winter cross country season is in full swing and Old Scotch Collegians' Athletic Club continues to enjoy considerable success. The season opener at Scotch

College, the Alex Jamieson 5 km, saw our team narrowly defeated, but it has since bounced back with brave victories in events around the Tan and at Haileybury College. Old Scotch, in conjunction with the current school team, has also won the inaugural Schools Challenge Relay.

Last year's school cross country captain James Rice has joined our existing core of stars, who include Peter ('93) and Andrew ('96) Simm, Johnny Halliday ('95), James Atkinson ('83), Tom Sutherland ('95) and Andrew Steel ('98). James will compete in both Athletics Victoria and APSOC races, as Old Scotch fields teams in both competitions.

The club's winter season provides a unique series of road and cross country events, comprising scratch, handicap and relay races over various distances. The social side of the sport is not neglected, with sumptuous afternoon teas supplied after most races. The venues range from the familiar Tan track to the rolling foothills of the Dandenongs. The races themselves are suitable for the dedicated and occasional runner alike. Once experienced, the circuit is hard to resist, as demonstrated by the longevity of club athletes such as Graham Wise ('52), Colin Findlay ('53) and Andrew Jamieson ('64), who are all still going strong!

Our winter calendar extends until mid September this year. If you fancy a run or jog with us, call Mark Purvis on 9534 5105 or Andrew Simm on 9818 0900 for more details.

Alternatively, surf the internet to http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Track/2423. The club intends holding a gala 75th anniversary dinner in October 2001, where it will announce its 'Team of the 20th Century'. Watch this space for the precise date and venue, as invitations will be extended to all past and present members of the club.
