Year 10 Work Experience a successful beginning

In the first week of Term 3 this year some two hundred and forty Year 10 students embarked upon four or five days of Work Experience. This is the first time that a whole year level has undertaken Work Experience at the same time.

The aim of the programme, initiated by Head of Senior School Mr KenWheat and Head of Course and Careers Services Dr Robert Smith, is twofold. Firstly to expose the boys to the world of work thereby helping them to develop the team and communication skills so important to success in the workplace. Secondly (where possible) it provides an opportunity for the boys to learn more about a career that they may be interested in pursuing.

A number of Work Experience positions were made available through offers from the Scotch family and the OSCA plans to have a more active involvement in the programme next year. Boys and their families had to use their initiative to secure a place and it was interesting to see the diverse range of occupations that our boys became involved in. The positions were in a wide range of geographical locations with some of our rural and overseas boarders choosing to do their experience close to home.

Real Estate Work Experience Many boys will follow this initial taste of Work Experience with further placements when they are in Years 11 and 12. There is no doubt that the more experience they get over the next few years the better placed they will be to make informed decisions about their future course and career choices.
