Matt Ramage marks strongly |
The Cordner-Eggleston Cup was played at the MCG this year as part of the AFL's Heritage Week activities. The match was preceded by a luncheon attended by 250 people in the Ryder Room, where Dr Colin Davy gave an enlightening address on the origins of the game of Australian Rules Football.
The Scotch 1st XVIII started the game well and had kicked four goals in the first quarter into the wind as Melbourne Grammar seemed to have difficulty coming to terms with the big arena. The second quarter saw Scotch maintain its lead and miss some opportunities to wrap up the match by half time. The rain came in the third quarter and MGS lifted to score some quick successive goals. Scotch settled and maintained a slender lead of points at the last break. The last quarter was an arm-wrestle as MGS tried desperately to attack into the wind whilst Scotch tried desperately to defend its lead. The game was broken open by Scotch Captain Hamish Dick who kicked an inspirational goal on the run to seal a hard-earnt victory 8.8.56 to 5.12.42 for the school to retain the Cordner-Eggleston Cup. Scotch completed the APS season in 4th place, behind premiers Xavier, Carey and Brighton Grammar. A slow start to the year with some tight losses probably came home to haunt the team despite a strong finish to the season.
