If you just happened to have walked past Shergold Building on the odd occasion that the 'Awesome Foursome' string quartet were rehearsing then you would have not only been subjected to the strains of Handel but also roars of laughter and enthusiastic cheers which you may have mistakingly thought were the nearby Hawthorn Football Club cheerleader squad.
Music is about communication and it was wonderful for me to witness the sheer joy and vitality that these young performers had when conveying their spirit through the game.
The students gradually learnt how each individual musical part fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle and the importance of feeling a common pulse for the music. They learnt which individual part was important to project outwards to the listener while the other parts required sensitivity for this to occur.
Leadership skills were enhanced and the students learnt how to use their bodies to lead the group and communicate between themselves. Then the louds and softs were added and the character of each phrase decided upon.
The four boys have been studying from an early age and the support and dedication of their parents and the Scotch College Music Department have been an important part of the process. Now in Years 3 and 4, these boys will contribute to Scotch music for many years to come.
The power of music became very evident with these young performers and their performance at the Year Four Concert was truly 'awesome'!
