We have had a wonderful start to our 150th anniversary celebrations. Term one's events have exceeded the expectations of the large numbers who have attended, and have allowed the Scotch community to rejoice in our wonderfully rich heritage.
Clearly this year will create for each of us unique memories, which will depend on the events attended and on our particular interests. For some the Highland Gathering will be a highlight, celebrating our Scottish traditions in fine style. Others have labelled the Dinner on the Main, with 1851 diners celebrating in a giant marquee, one of the best events they have ever attended. It was a triumph of logistical planning, after three years of detailed work by a devoted band of parents and the willing co-operation of many staff. One can only imagine the concerns of Curator, Ashley Miller, and his staff as the precious Main Oval turf was covered for about 10 days! Happily, a full recovery seems to be assured.
The almost palpable enthusiasm of boys and staff meant that the Junior School's re-enactment day was truly memorable and enjoyable. A 'back-to-school' Assembly in the Quadrangle attracted numerous former students, many of whom enjoyed a school tour guided by a senior student. Special anniversary ties, donated by OSCA to each student, are a valued part of boys' uniform for the year.
The Heritage Walk and Torch Relay was rich with history and symbolism. Old Boys, some from East Melbourne days, distinguished guests, Scotch parents and families and all current students gathered to celebrate the continuity of the Scotch spirit. A special moment was when the School Captain, Brendan Ferguson, accompanied Oliver Nicol, the youngest Year 1 student, up the Chapel steps to ignite the cauldron. The leaving generation reached down to encourage those setting out on the Scotch adventure. Current generations accepted the challenge to maintain our great traditions.
The boys were challenged to find an almost hidden plaque bearing Isaiah's words: 'Look unto the rock whence ye are hewn'. It was found two days later by two pairs of boys, William Wilson and Matthew Bernard of Year 9 and Shahan Cheong and James Doidge of Year 8.
These Old Testament words remind us that the school we value today resulted from the work of many during its history. God has richly blessed this school during our 150 years and it is our prayer that He will continue to do so.
