He succeeds Ian Dunn (61), who held the position from 1996-2002. It has been of interest that there have only been six leaders to the Law Institute, which was founded in 1859. The first Secretary was Arthur Robinson (1887), who held the position from 1903 to 1918. John is the son of former Premier of Victoria John Cain (48). He started in his new position in March, having left the law firm of Maurice Blackburn Cashman, which firm he lead for over ten years. He is married with three children. John McCaughey (64) Musical Director of the Astra Chamber Musical Society, has won the award for the most distinguished contribution to the presentation of Australian composition by an individual, in the 2000 Australian Music Centre Awards presented in Sydney last year. Chairman of the School Council Michael Robinson (55), pictured right, was awarded an AO in the Australia Day Honours List for 2002. The award was made for service to the law, particularly the development and encouragement of International practice for Australian law firms and the provision of assistance to the legal services structures in countries within the Asia Pacific Region, to business and business regulations, and to the community through support for the tertiary and secondary education sectors, medical research institutions and private health service administration.
All Old Boys and other members of the Scotch Family are aware of the great contribution which Michael makes to the School and all wonder how he manages to fit all his activities into his tight schedule. His wife Judith, son Charles (86) Will (89) Ed (93) and daughter Alice have been greatly supportive of and very proud of Michaels highly deserved award. In a recent email to the Old Boys Office Winston Tay (91) said, After completing Yr 12, I proceeded to read Law and Commerce at Monash University and graduated after five years with an LLB/B.Com. I also subsequently obtained a Masters in Finance from the National University of Ireland. I then enlisted in the Singapore Armed Forces as part of my National Service and after three months of Basic Training, I was posted to the Military Police. For the next two years, I was trained as an Investigator with the Special Investigations Branch and was exposed to a variety of skills including Military Law, Finger printing, Interview techniques and Unarmed Combat. After being discharged from the Army, I worked as a Management Trainee with Fraser & Neave, (which is a Diversified Conglomerate) for six months before gaining employment with Overseas Union Bank, (now United Overseas Bank after a merger) Investment Banking Division. I am currently an Assistant Manager, involved primarily in the structuring and execution of debt capital market issues and syndicated loan transactions, with emphasis on Singapore dollar bond issues and asset securitisations. If any old Boy wishes to catch up with me in Singapore, he can contact me at the email address, winston.tayCL@UOBgroup.com.
