For many years Scotch College has enjoyed and celebrated outstanding VCE results, and the results of the Class of 2002 are no exception. Continuing what has become a gratifying pattern over the years, this Class achieved excellent results and ensured an almost 100% transition to tertiary study.
Nicholas Sheridan is the Dux of the Class of 2002 with an Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) of 99.90. Eddie Chan (99.85), Branko Ananijevski (99.85), Nicholas Chong (99.85) and Peter Commons (99.80) performed particularly strongly. Nicholas Sheridan achieved a perfect score of 50 in Chemistry and Specialist Mathematics; Eddie Chan in Biology and English, and Nicholas Chong in both English and English Literature.
In brief, 22 boys achieved an ENTER of 99 and above. 103 boys achieved an ENTER of 90 and above, which places them in the top 10% of the State. 25.8% of the Class achieved at least one Study Score of 40 and above.
(A Study Score of 40 places students in the top 8% of the State in a subject.) 100% of the Class of 2002 received their Certificate, and 96% achieved an ENTER in the top 50% of the state. Boys, staff, parents have much to be pleased about.
Whilst it is appropriate to celebrate the quite outstanding results at the top end of the scale, it is also appropriate to recognise the overall achievements of the Class of 2002. The majority of boys who presented for the VCE performed to their potential and for that they are to be applauded. A number of boys achieved an ENTER significantly higher than what might possibly have been expected; this was a result of steady determination and the pursuit of a 'personal best' effort.
At Scotch College approximately two-thirds of any Year 11 cohort attempt a Unit 3-4 subject and receive at least one Study Score at the end of Year 11 that contributes to their ENTER. Last year's Year 11 boys acquitted themselves admirably. Six boys gained a perfect score of 50, and 59 boys gained a Study Score of 40 and above. This augurs very well indeed for the Class of 2003.
O
nce the Class of 2002 had received their results they finalised their enrolments at various tertiary institutions. 96% of boys were offered a tertiary place by the close of first round offers, and by the close of second round offers 98% were placed. Several boys elected to complete a GAP year overseas (usually within the Commonwealth) whilst a number of boys deferred until 2004 before embarking on tertiary study.
Several boys in the Class of 2002 have been awarded significant scholarships. Nicholas Sheridan has won the Melbourne National Scholarship to study at the University of Melbourne; Nicholas Chong has been invited to audition at the Juilliard School of Music in New York; and Ye Lian He has won the Faculty Merit Scholarship to study at the University of Melbourne (Conservatorium).
The Class of 2002, their teachers and their parents are to be commended on a collective effort and subsequent excellent set of results. Scotch College expects and encourages each boy to perform to his own personal potential; there is no doubt that the Class of 2002 has done this and sets a fine example to those graduating classes that are to come.
