The 2003 Monthly Luncheon program got off to a flying start at the Cardinal Pavilion with a very topical subject when Board member of Cricket Victoria, Peter Warner related his experiences when visiting South Africa for the World Cup Series. He also outlined the evolution and changes that are presently taking place in Victoria to make cricket more relevant in the modern sporting environment.
In visiting South Africa he found their problems of unemployment, illegal immigration and crime present a huge challenge to their government. The strength and influence of Nelson Mandela has been an enormous impact in unifying the country following the apartheid era. The social and crime differences between the principal cities gave an interesting insight into some of the difficulties with which South Africa has to contend. Quite obviously scenic and sophisticated Cape Town was a favoured spot for him.
Turning to cricket, with the World Cup in progress, he compared the competing teams and was convinced that the depth of a very capable Australian side would prevail. He saw New Zealand as the dark horse when it came to the Finals. Cricket and rugby in South Africa are seen as 'white' sports, but the majority of the youth play soccer. However the interest and obligation of conducting the World Cup has put enormous pressure on the home team to succeed.
Visiting Zimbabwe he saw the parlous state of their economy which has been compounded by the lack of tourists visiting the magnificent Victoria Falls. This was in stark contrast to a thriving Botswana. He gave graphic description of his enjoyment in touring the Game Parks there. The wildlife being so extensive and varied, most certainly this made an impression that has captured his imagination.
In closing he responded to questions relating to topical thoughts on cricket which he handled with deft diplomacy.
