Dr Norman Curry |
Rev Dr Norman Curry AM retired from the School Council in October 2003 after more than 14 years' service, including eight years as Vice Chairman.
He has had a career of extraordinary breadth, including being Director General of Education in Victoria (1982-85), an Honorary Priest at St Paul's Cathedral and Deputy Chancellor of the University of Melbourne.
Dr Curry was the guest of honour at Speech Night on 23 October and the Chairman, Michael Robinson, introduced him with the following tribute.
'Dr Curry was invited to join the Scotch Council in June 1989, although he had no previous involvement with the School, either as a student or a parent. Nevertheless, his experience and expertise in education, together with his strong Christian commitment, made him an ideal contributor to the governance of Scotch College.
Throughout his extended period on the School Council, he has rendered continuous and outstanding service on a variety of Council committees, including Chairman of the Finance Committee and Chairman of the Strategy and Planning Committee.
He has taken a very keen interest in all aspects of School life. Dr Curry is a regular attendee of School functions and activities, from concerts and plays to sporting matches and the Cadet Tattoo. He was a most generous financial contributor to the James Forbes Academy, becoming a member of the Scotch Foundation at its most senior level.
Dr Curry was elected unanimously as Vice Chairman of the School Council at the end of 1995 which was a recognition of his leadership attributes and of the great respect which he enjoyed from his colleagues on the Council. He has been a most reliable Deputy to me throughout the last eight years.
Dr Curry displayed great loyalty to Scotch and this was particularly relevant on matters of School governance which came to a head two years ago.
I was enormously grateful for his wise counsel and unswerving loyalty and support throughout that episode which, happily, is now well behind us.
Dr Curry truly has become a wonderful member of the Scotch Family . . .'
