Peoplescape is one of the largest community art installations undertaken in this country and applauds the diversity and individual contribution of the people who really help to make Australia what it is today. Over 5000 figures from all over Australia will be installed in Canberra, standing in rows that will stretch from Old Parliament House up the lawns of Federation Mall to the grassy banks of Parliament House.
Our Peoplescape person is a past Junior School Scotch boy, Professor Hugh Taylor AC, who is an eye doctor of significant reputation both in Australia and overseas, for his work with aboriginal communities and eye research.
An article on Prof. Taylor in the September edition of Great Scot, detailed his award of an AC in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
Year 5 boys have painted their interpretation of Prof. Taylor and this will be installed in Canberra to be part of the opening celebrations on Sunday 25 November.
The launch was broadcast live from Parliament House on national television, and was the national finale for the Centenary Year of Australia.
Year 5 boys painted Prof. Taylor in his Scotch activities of rowing, scouting and reading books on eyes in his university studies.
Then they painted a boomerang to represent his work with aboriginal Australians and a world for his work overseas. The boys painted many eyes on his white coat to tell everyone that he is an eye doctor.
Prof. Taylor visited the Junior School and spoke to the Year 5 boys about his time in Junior School and his work on eye research. The boys found his talk most inspirational and asked some excellent questions. Prof. Taylor showed the boys his AC medal and they were all able to touch and see the detail.
Prof. Taylor was a great role model for our boys.
