Every Saturday morning, hundreds of boys represent Scotch in various sports teams. It is an invaluable part of the week - we learn about sportsmanship, dedication and teamwork, while enjoying ourselves with our mates. On one of these Saturday mornings in Term 1, I was chatting with some parents on the side of a cricket field. hen I asked one of the parents what winter sport her son would play, he replied: "We're playing rugby." This comment- "we", not "he" - made me realise the depth and strength of not only Scotch boys, but of the entire Scotch Family.
We have enjoyed an incredibly successful year so far at Scotch. Our 1st VIII crew's victory at the Head of the River was an undeniably inspirational moment for all boys who attended. In the Cordner-Eggleston Cup, Scrotch displayed great skill, heading into the match as underdogs but losing by just nine points to Melbourne Grammar School.
The lastever May Concert showed one more time the depth of musical talent in the James Forbes Academy: from the Symphony Orchestra to the swinging Show Band to the Year Seven Joyner Band, all boys performed magnificently. The 2004 Drama Program is under way, with the Middle School Play
Pressure and a sellout Senior School production of Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Our debaters are again enjoying a Scotch home ground advantage, and with one round remaining several teams were still undefeated. In Year 12 we recently completed our midyear VCE exams - it's not long now until we too are Old Boys.
All of these events constantly occurring at Scotch could not happen without the support of the Scotch Family: and most of their work goes unnoticed. On the banks of Nagambie and the side of the football field, Old Boys and parents back our teams' efforts. As audiences in music and drama, our families and friends have witnessed the culmination of hours of practice. And as we receive our exam results, e will all be thankful for the help given by our teachers, tutors and parents.
As students we should be grateful for the hard work of so many members of the Scotch Family. I wonder how many of us appreciate the supportive acts of those around us - a freshly cut lunch, a cheer from the sidelines, advice in the corridor or a small nod of encouragement. To all of you - a big thank you.
