Cardinal Club honours our Olympic rowers

The Cardinal Club was privileged to have two of its members represent Australia at the Atlanta Olympics. Drew Ginn and Georgina Douglas were honoured recently at the annual Cardinal Cocktail party held on 15 March.

Drew was a Gold Medallist and a member of the winning coxless four (Awesome Foursome) and Georgina was a finalist and member of the Womens VIII. In 1992 Drew rowed in the successful Scotch 1st VIII crew that won the Head of the River, and Georgina is the daughter of old boy David Douglas who won a rowing silver medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Drew and Georgina were each presented with an engraved silver trophy in recognition of their achievements.

The evening was enjoyed by over 130 people including the deputy principal Mr Ian Savage. The Cardinal Club President, Andrew Sladen, presented Mr Savage with a cheque for $3,000 to help fund additional weights for the weight training centre within the Cardinal Pavilion. A spirited Wine Auction then took place and all who participated are to be thanked for both their generosity.

The Cardinal Club has brought parents of Scotch rowers together at the various functions held over the year including the Quiz Night, the Family Breakfast and the Cocktail Party and Wine Auction. In November many old boys gathered with their crews to attend the farewell barbecue for David Boykett organised by the Cardinal Committee.

Over the last three years The Cardinal Club has raised in excess of $40,000 from the sale of merchandise and various social functions which will be used to aid rowing at Scotch as well as support the Cardinal pavilion memorabilia program. Any donations towards this memorabilia program would be very much appreciated. Further enquires regarding this can be made to the OSCA office.

Given the success of this year's crews at the Head of the River with all five crews making the A Final, there is a feeling of optimism about Scotch rowing for 1998. Hopefully the financial support the Cardinal Club is providing may make some contribution towards a very successful Boat Club next year and Scotch winning the Head of the River again in the near future.
