Tim makes Cohen Trophy a family affair

The First XI this year has had a highly successful season. In the APS competition the XI finished 2nd after leading the competition for some time.

An uncharacteristic slip at the latter end of the season allowed the opposition to win by one point, despite the fact that Scotch won more games than any one else in the competition. Robert Ashton captained the side with distinction.

The H I Cohen Trophy, which has been awarded annually since 1920 is named after Henry Isaac Cohen (1872- 1942). Henry Cohen entered Scotch in 1885. He was not a regular member of the XI but was Dux of the School in Mathematics and Classics. He was appointed King's Counsel in 1920, entering politics in 1921, at the suggestion of Arthur Robinson. He held several ministerial positions and was a founding member of both the Old Scotch Collegians' Association and the Old Scotch Collegian Club. It is appropriate, with this sense of tradition and allegiance to Scotch that the trophy named after him should be won this year by Timothy Downing, following in the footsteps of his grandfather Geoff Collie ('35) who won the trophy in 1934 and 1935.

The XI this year retained the trophy in the annual Scots v Scotch trophy with a comprehensive win in Sydney. The Crusaders were beaten by the XI, with Tim Downing making a fine 100.

The Old Boys' team, which was captained by Matt McGregor ('85), also succumbed to the school in their annual match.
