Nicholas Sheridan (Year 12) was recently awarded a Silver Medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad held in Glasgow, Scotland. Australia won one gold medal, two silver medals, one bronze and an Honourable Mention, achieving twenty sixth position out of eighty four countries in terms of team scores.
Nicholas has a formidable reputation as a mathematician, and it was a great thrill to hear that many hours of hard work had come to fruition with a place in the Australian Team. Throughout his schooling, he has shown a love for and impressive ability in all fields of mathematics and the sciences. What few people realise is the sheer number of months of intensive training and the rigorous selection process that is undertaken before a team is chosen. From approximately one hundred thousand Australian students who complete the Australian Mathematics Olympiad a team of six is formed. It is an honour indeed to achieve this distinction, much less to be successful enough to win a medal.
Nicholas has spoken enthusiastically of the enjoyment he has gained from meeting young people from around the world and exploring the cultural elements of the Scottish city that hosted the Olympiad. This is not surprising given his involvement in the Pipes and Drums at Scotch, and his own impressive playing of the pipes!
We congratulate Nicholas and his team leaders, the Deputy of which was Daniel Mathews ('98), on his wonderful achievement at the Mathematical Olympiad.
