The rugby season ended on a high note on 10 August at Xavier College where the 1st XV defended their Premiership trophy for another year. Both our first and second teams made the Grand Final this year and our U/16s were the Age Group Premiers. This is a wonderful result and reflects the strength of rugby at the school.
The 1st XV final was played against St.Kevin's for the second year running and provided the large crowd with a wonderful spectacle. Kicking against a stiff breeze in the first half, Scotch was able to turn two fortuitous loose ball positions into tries. In the second half, things tightened up, but with the wind behind them the boys used their tactical advantage to overcome their tired bodies and extract a win. An excellent result 22-12.
The 2nd XV also enjoyed considerable success during the season, but were outplayed in the premiership game. They went down to St.Kevin's in a gallant attempt to steal the match in the dying minutes. While the result was disappointing, the season reflected the depth of rugby at the senior level and illustrates the renewed commitment to playing at both grade levels in the senior years. A solid performance 19-14.
Scotch Rugby has had a wonderful year, and it is important we acknowledge the considerable efforts of the coaching staff, the players and the boys. All bodes well for the future.
