The 2002 Football season was both successful and frustrating. With a very even team many players played key roles from week to week and we had no unhealthy reliance on key individuals. As a result the team was very cohesive and team orientated from the start, and played some quality football throughout the season.
The final result showed that Scotch finished in third place with a very impressive 8 win 2 loss season, unfortunately when up against the powerhouse sides Xavier (the eventual premiers) and runners up Caulfield Grammar we could not produce our best form, and struggled to contain the class players that these teams are able to produce.
Round 1 - Scotch 16/15/111 defeated Geelong College 2/7/19
Round 2 - Caulfield 17/14/116 defeated Scotch 5/7/37
Round 3 - Scotch 11/8/74 defeated Carey 8/8/56
Round 4 - Scotch 24/10/154 defeated Haileybury 3/5/23
Round 5 - Scotch 10/5/65 defeated St Kevins 3/3/21
Round 6 - Scotch 19/12/126 defeated Geelong Grammar 6/8/44
Round 7 - Scotch 13/12/90 defeated Melbourne 7/6/48
Round 8 - Scotch 18/16/124 defeated Brighton 4/7/33
Round 9 - Scotch 13/10/88 defeated Wesley 7/8/50
Round 10 - Xavier 15/18/108 defeated Scotch 6/9/45
Best players for the season were Angus Pearce, who won the Best and Fairest, Sam Jonas (runner up), and James Barton (3rd.) Matt Earle won the Coaches award for his tremendous form at Centre Half Back, and Sam Lilley the Most Improved with his dash from defence. Five Scotch players were selected in the combined APS squad, Pearce, Lilley, captain Nick Ackroyd, Full Forward Simon Dick, and Ruckman Andrew Ericksen.
In conclusion 2002 was an enjoyable season, with all players willing to learn and seek to get the best out of themselves. The final results prove however just how tough this competition is, and how much work and commitment is required in order to be consistently at the top of the ladder.

With the 2002 football season over the 1858 Club can be well pleased with its contribution to the School Football program. Teacher in Charge of Football Dr Robert Smith and the many teacher coaches must be congratulated on their efforts in delivering a strong result across all year levels.
The 1858 Club has a responsibility to provide the support and fundraising required to deliver things that complement the school program. During this season, the 1858 Club has organised match day parent support, including boundary and goal umpires, and trainers across the younger year levels. In season 2003 we intend to grow this involvement much as you would expect at local club football.
Two very successful fundraising activities were held during the year with the Dinner Dance being a highlight, which included many parents from the school football fraternity. This function emulates the culture of a local football club and allowed parents of all teams to meet. The 5th Annual breakfast was again a raging success with Garry Lyon keeping over four hundred and fifty guests entertained in an atmosphere designed for corporate groups, parents and friends of the school.
The 1858 Club wishes to thank all those people who attended both functions as the funds raised are put across the fifteen Teams at Scotch, providing specialist coaching through Chris Naish four days per week. Additionally the 1858 Club strives to provide the little things that emulate a Football Club Culture. During season 2002,
Pie and Pizza nights were held and funds were allocated to a development trip to Darwin and the Tiwi Islands for a Team of Year 10 and 11 boys.
Trophies were provided for individuals across each team in recognition of excellence and funding support was provided to the Old Scotch Football Club to hold information sessions for Year 12 boys regarding their football career progression after school.
Congratulations to two members of last years school 1st XVIII. Campbell Brown ('01), and Will Slade ('01), have both made their AFL Senior debuts this season. Campbell has made a big impact since his debut with Hawthorn earlier this year, where he has developed a reputation as a courageous ball player.
Will made his debut for Geelong against St Kilda and will always remember his first game where the Cats held off the fast finishing Saints in a one point win at Colonial Stadium. Will has put on hold his competitive snow boarding skills to concentrate on his football career. Geelong's football Manager Gary Davidson said ' the things we like about him are his athleticism and competitiveness'.
