The Scotch College Military Band has a long history of service both to the College and the wider community – its contribution to ANZAC Day, the Tattoo and beyond being well known. It was in this spirit that all members of the Military Band recently gave up a day to perform for several local public primary schools.
The Band donned their splendid scarlet uniforms, packed their instruments and boarded a bus for special performances at Laburnum and Balwyn North Primary schools, before returning to perform for our own Junior School.
The boys and girls were treated to a musical performance, which included such favourite tunes as ‘Colonel Bogey’, ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and the jazzier number, ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing’.
Senior leaders from the Band also gave explanations about the role of the Military Band and Cadets and their specific responsibility within. Drum Major Alexi Bialecki’s mace twirling proved a popular event, as did bugler Doug Eager’s reveille. BSM Angus Tiernan fielded some ‘tricky’ questions, while some lucky children were even given the opportunity to conduct and play an instrument with the Band.
The excitement in the eyes of the children when they saw and heard the Band was testimony to the success of the tour. Thanks must go to musical director Mr R Schmidli for his effort in organising this important event.
